Certificate of Compliance

Every gas installation in South Africa needs a COC. Here is what it is, when you need one and how we handle it.

What it is

A Certificate of Compliance is a document issued by a registered gas practitioner confirming that an installation was done to the national standard and passed a leak and pressure test. It is a legal requirement for all gas installations, not an optional extra.

The certificate records what was installed, where it is and who signed it off. Keep it somewhere you can find it, because you will be asked for it.

When you need one

  • After any new installation, alteration or appliance change.
  • When you sell your home and the transfer goes through.
  • When your insurer asks for proof after a claim or at renewal.
  • When a tenant or a body corporate requests it.

Buying or selling

Conveyancers usually ask for a valid gas COC before transfer. If the installation was done years ago by someone unknown, get it inspected early rather than three days before the deadline.

Inherited an installation?

We inspect what is there, tell you plainly what fails and what it costs to put right, then issue the certificate once it passes. No certificate is issued for work that has not been tested.

Registered installer

Excel Gas is a fully licenced and registered installer. Work follows SANS 10087-1, the national standard for handling and distributing LPG in domestic installations.
